The following photographs show some of the sites or markers where important events occurred in Pittsburgh labor history. Directions are provided to many of the sites.
This and other events related to the railroad strike took place in and around the Pittsburgh area.
Pioneer Unions/The Ironworkers
Founding Convention of the AFL
This event took place in the former Turner and Shiller meeting halls in downtown Pittsburgh. Shiller Hall was located at the current intersection of 4th and Liberty Avenues.
Armstrong Statue
The statue is located in West Park on the Northside near the National Aviary. It stands at the intersection of Ridge Avenue and Merchant Street.
The Bost Building is located in Homestead at the intersection of Eighth Avenue and Heisel Street and beside the Post Office.(Also see next two photographs).
Pinkerton Landing
The Pinkerton Landing site is in Munhall on East Waterfront Drive between the Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse and Marcegaglia-USA. (Also see next photograph).
Homestead Strike Victims
The Homestead Strike Victims marker is located in St. Mary's Cemetary at the intersection of Main Street and 22nd Avenue in Munhall.
This site is located outside Pittsburgh in Morewood, Westmoreland County.
The marker is located in McKees Rocks on Route 51 at the McKees Rocks Bridge.
The marker for the Great Steel Strike of 1919 is located at 1070 Braddock Avenue, Braddock.
The marker commemorating William Sylvis is located on the campus of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Indiana, Pennsylvania.
The shantytown was located near St. Patrick's Catholic Church at 57 21st Street in the Strip District.
United Steel Workers of America
The United Steel Workers of America Organizing Committee was founded in the Grant Building, Grant Street. This marker is located on the corner of Grant Street and Third Avenue.
Fannie Sellins/Joe Starzeleski Grave Site
The grave site is located in the town of Arnold, Westmoreland County.
The location of the marker for the Founding Convention of the CIO is on the North Side in front of Martin Luther King Elementary School on North Commons.
The church is located at 24 Maryland Avenue, Millvale.
Philip Murray is buried in St. Ann's Cemetary. From Route 51 South, turn right onto Route 88/Library Road. Proceed 3 stop lights to Castle Shannon Boulevard. Turn right onto Willow Road. Continue past the trolley tracks to Baldwin Road (right turn). Take the next left onto St. Ann Street.
To get to the Philip Murray Bridge in Cannonsburg, take I79 South to Exit 10, then follow 980/Morganza Road. Just beyond the Pizza Hut on the right, the Murray Bridge crosses Chartiers Creek.
National Labor Relations Act Supreme Court Decision
This marker is located at the site of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation Aliquippa plant.
